Best Time to Visit St. George: Weather and Events

Home  /  Events

The honest answer to when you should visit is that it depends on whether you want to hike or float. St. George, Utah runs hot in summer and mild the rest of the year, so spring and fall are the sweet spot for the parks, while June through August is all about the resort pools. There are also a few big events worth planning around, or avoiding, depending on your crowd. Here is a month-by-month look at the weather and the events, so you can pick your week. After years of bookings, we can tell you which weeks fill first.

The short version

  • Best for hiking: March to May and October
  • Best for the pool: June to August (hot)
  • Mild winters, great for a quiet break
  • Big events: Huntsman Senior Games and the St. George Marathon, both in October
  • Heated pools mean the resort works year round

When is the best time to visit St. George?

It depends on what you came for, and St. George works year round. For hiking and the national parks, aim for March through May or October, when daytime highs sit comfortably in the 70s and 80s. Summer, June through August, is hot and often over 100 degrees, which is ideal if your trip is built around the resort pools and early-morning starts. Winter is mild and quiet, with highs in the 50s, and because the resort pools are heated they stay usable even then. The two biggest draws on the calendar both land in October: the Huntsman World Senior Games and the St. George Marathon, which fill lodging fast, so if you are coming for either, book early. For most groups, spring and fall give the best mix of weather and open trails, while summer is all about the water. Here is the month-by-month picture.

What is the weather like month by month?

St. George has a warm desert climate: long hot summers, mild winters, and very little rain. Here are average daytime highs through the year, with the live forecast on the National Weather Service.

What big events happen in St. George?

October is the busiest month, with two large events back to back: the St. George Marathon and the Huntsman World Senior Games. Tuacahn runs outdoor Broadway shows from spring into fall. Here is the calendar worth planning around.

Huntsman World Senior GamesOctober 5 to 1711,000+ athletes, age 50 and over

Plan around these. See the Senior Games and Marathon pages for lodging.

When should you book early?

October is the one to plan ahead for. Between the Marathon and the Senior Games, the whole area books out months in advance, and a 7-bedroom home goes first; we typically fill that month by late summer. Spring break in March and the winter holidays are the other busy windows. If your dates are flexible and you just want the parks without the crowds, late April or November are quiet and beautiful.

Is the resort good in the off-season?

Yes. Because the Paradise Village pools and hot tubs are heated year round, a winter or early-spring stay still means pool days, just with smaller crowds and lower demand. The mild winters make it a nice quiet break, and the parks are at their most comfortable. See the home on the home and the resort on Paradise Village at Zion.
