St. George is one of the best golf towns in the West, and Sunshine Suites sits right in the middle of it. We host a golf-buddies group or two every season, so we know which tee times fill up first. Within about half an hour you have championship desert courses framed by red rock and black lava, and because the winters are mild, you can play nearly year round. Here are the courses worth booking, who designed them, and how far each is from the house.
The short version
- Entrada at Snow Canyon, the top local layout, about 10 minutes
- Sand Hollow Resort, 27 holes, reservoir and dune views
- Coral Canyon, red-rock elevation, easy to reach
- Sky Mountain, great value on a plateau
- Mild winters mean golf nearly year round
What are the best golf courses near St. George?
There are more than a dozen good courses around St. George, but four come up again and again. Entrada at Snow Canyon, designed by David McLay Kidd and routed through black lava and red rock, is the top local layout and the closest at about ten minutes. Sand Hollow Resort, a John Fought design with 27 holes over reservoir and dune views, is about thirty minutes out and worth the drive. Coral Canyon, by Keith Foster, sits on red-rock elevation about twenty minutes away and is an easy, consistently good round. Sky Mountain, on a plateau in Hurricane about twenty-five minutes out, is the value pick. Because winters here are mild, you can play nearly year round. Here are the standouts, their architects, and the drive from the house, cross-checked against Golf Digest course ratings.
| Course | Designer | Drive from the house | Known for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entrada at Snow Canyon | David McLay Kidd | ~10 min | Top Utah layout, lava and red rock |
| Sand Hollow Resort | John Fought | ~30 min | 27 holes, reservoir and dune views |
| Coral Canyon | Keith Foster | ~20 min | Red-rock elevation, easy to reach |
| Sky Mountain | Jeff Hardin | ~25 min | Hurricane plateau, great value |
How far are the courses from Sunshine Suites?
Closer than at most golf trips. Entrada at Snow Canyon is the nearest, about ten minutes away, and the others are all within roughly half an hour. That means you can tee off early and be back at the house for a swim and lunch, or play two different courses in a long weekend without much driving.
Can you golf year-round?
Nearly year round. The mild winters, with January highs often in the mid-50s, are exactly why golfers come to St. George in the off-season, when courses up north are closed. Summer golf works best with an early tee time before the heat, and spring and fall are about as good as desert golf gets.
Which course should we play?
If you only play one, we point most guests to Entrada or Sand Hollow for the scenery and the design. Coral Canyon is a consistently good, accessible round, and Sky Mountain is the value pick. For a group that wants variety, play the close one first and add a second the next morning.
Is a golf group a good fit for the house?
It is a natural fit. Sunshine Suites sleeps up to 20 in private suites, with a hot tub for after the round and a kitchen so you are not eating out every night. A golf buddies trip splits the cost down nicely. See the per-person math on the large groups page.
